The Life of Author Edward C. Peach - Ophiel

One author most people in the occult circuit are familiar with is Ophiel, which is the pen-name for the man Edward C. Peach. His life was a mystery to many and there is little in the way of a bio for him on the Internet. In spite of his many books, Wikipedia has no article for him.

One of my various hobbies is genealogy. So, taking matters into my own hands, this is what I've gleaned about the life and times of Edward C. Peach or the Occult author "Ophiel". I've searched and searched for a portrait of this man, whose writing style is both casual and friendly, but could find nothing. Many in the occult community are familiar with his books. I have nearly all of them, either in hard copy or on Kindle.

His mother Alice, ordered this birth certificate later in years, after Ophiel was an adult. I can just imagine that his original BC got lost somehow while moving. It's happened to many of us.

Edward Compator Peach was born on Jan 4,1904 in Johnson City Iowa. His parents were Joseph Peach 1865-1938 and Alice Peach (nee Boberich) 1876-1963. His mother was listed as a housekeeper and his father as a cigar maker on an early census. Another census mentions that he purchased an appliance or stove shop. They were both Lutheran. Later census and records state that his parents divorced. His father Joseph, subsequently married Edna Hevern in 1923. Joseph Peach sold kitchen appliances in the 1930s in Iowa and died of a stroke in 1938.

Edward's paternal grandparents were both from the Kingdom of Bohemia, Czechoslovakia. His maternal grandparents were immigrants from Baden-Württemberg Germany, and both sets of grandparents must have been part of the Great Westward Movement, as they all settled in Iowa and Edward's parents were born there as well.

Edward C. Peach is one of two children born to the family. The other sibling, a brother he never met, was named Carl. Brother Carl died at age three a year before Edward was born.

Between 1905 and 1910, Edward lived with his his aunt and uncle, his mother's sister and her husband. These two were named Annie (nee Boberich) and John W. Bolton in North Dodge, Iowa. This must have been around the time that Alice and Joseph Peach's marriage broke up. Alice later found work as a housekeeper in California and Edward came to live with her shortly thereafter.

I do not see evidence that Ophiel was ever married or fathered children. He traveled to Sydney Australia in the 1960s. He must have made a decent living selling his many books because he did not die a poor man.

It appears he may have worked as a clerk on an ocean liner as well as a clerk in a stock broker's office. It also appears that he went to college in his early 30s and had a 4 year degree by 36. He might have gone to California Berkley, because he resided in Berkeley during those years.

There are many missing pieces to the life of Ophiel.   Who were his friends ?  How did he become interested in the occult ?  Who was his one true love ?      But this is more than I've seen listed anywhere about him online.  Sometimes we have to do our own extensive research to find answers.

His last known address was 401 Twin Peaks Blvd San Francisco, CA 94114. Here is a picture of his home when he passed in 1988, from google maps. According to Zillow, his home is worth approximately $3,816,208 today. (see attached picture, beautiful views of the city from this hilltop home).

Edward has at least a 4 year college degree according the the records. He died on 14 Aug 1988 (age 84) in Alameda County San Francisco, CA and is buried at the Abbey of the Palms Mausoleum Sanctuary of Worship (South Section, 1st Floor) 16 Tiers, Tier 1 at bottom Tier 15. Upon subsequent research, it appears he never married.

In reading his book, The Art of Contacting the Demiurge, Ophiel leaves an address for his students to correspond to in 1974, in Oakland CA.  He was 72 years old then.  Here is a google image of his home in 1974:

From reading Ophiel's books, I got that he was a caring man, who cared about his readers.  He always urged his readers to write to him and ask questions if they didn't understand something.  He knew a lot about high ceremonial magic, but he never alluded to where he learned what he knew.   Anyone with any more information about Edward C. Peach, aka Ophiel, please leave a comment.

Here is a link to Ophiel's  Find-A-Grave memorial

Here are the 9 most popular books written by Ophiel:

  • The Art and Practice of Astral Projection
  • The Art and Practice of Caballa Magic
  • The Art and Practice of the Occult
  • The Art and Practice  of Clairvoyance
  • The Art and Practice  of Contacting the Demiurge
  • Art and Practice  of Talismanic magic
  • Oracle of Fortuna
  • The Art and Practice of Getting Material Things Through Creation Visualization
UPDATE:  I recently got a message from a man on ancestry.com, who informed me that Ophiel's one true love was a man named Tony Degenova, his common law husband, to whom he left everything to when he died at age 84.  Tony would be 91 years old today.

    1. Thanks for your comment ! We have a group on Google all about Ophiel. I wrote this blog for that group at first. Ophiel will sometimes have me spinning in circles with his writing style but he's a loved author by many, like a mentor and a friend.

  4. I swear to god I once found an article were it stated he was good friends with "Llewellyn George" the guy who founded Llewellyn Publishing.

Also in that article it stated that Mr Peach was a big fan of Dion Fortune and during some unspecified time in his occult workings he gained the ability to travel in the Astral Body with full consciousness. And this is the moment when he started writing.

  5. Wonderful, and most informative. Thank you for posting! I've just re-ordered (and received) a few of his books again. I intend to pass them onto my son. I once knew someone who I'd learned tarot from, (a Qabalist) who spoke of Ophiel however, in a rather negative manner. He "claimed" that Ophiel used to run around the streets of somewhere in California (It's been so long I don't remember), with a shopping cart mad as the march hare. This was due to (as this tarot teacher put it) Ophiel having gotten trapped in the Astral. However, in light of reading the information you've gathered here and put forth, I'm thinking that either this tarot teacher had gotten his "claim" wrong or mixed Ophiel up with someone else. Nevertheless, thank you very much again for this wonderful post.

    1. He lived to be 82 years old. Who ever said ascension was going to make a person look good? I don't doubt he have a few Mad Hatter moments.

  8. Ophiel never wrote a book about Tarot, and the particular book you mention is written by an entirely different and not mysterious at all author. Also, Ophiel's The Art and Practice of.... Creative Visualization is one book, not two. The second you mention is one of the modern editions of the original, but the book itself is the same.
GO GO GO and DOUBLE-CHECK YOUR SOURCES!!! (as Ophiel would have written) :)

  9. You've got a wrong book in your list. Ophiel didn't write "Tarot: Mirror of the Soul". It was Ziegler, a different author.

  10. Fascinating information about Ophiel. Thank you. I work with autistic adults and have sometimes read things they have written. I get a strong impression from Ophiel's unique writing style that he was on the autism/Asperger's spectrum. It would be interesting if this could be verified, though in those days it often went undiagnosed. In no way does this invalidate his work as an occultist. Quite the opposite. One aspect autistic people have is an ability to focus and stay fixated on one topic. Focus and concentration are necessary to achieve success in many occult activities such as astral projection and creative visiualization. A fasicnating person. Hopefully someday someone will find a photo.

    3. I get the impression Ophiel was a Capricorn Sun and a Capricorn Moon (I believe he mentions this in one of his books). The result of doubling up Capricorn turns you into a writer like Ophiel. Ultra practical even to the point of despising good form!

I'm a Capricorn sun and thus understand him well.

    4. Agreed very much, I’m a Capricorn rising and I very much appreciate his style of writing! Not dismissing the possibility of him being on the spectrum... it’s rather far fetched though to assume based only on his writings, speaking as a mother with a child with autism.

  11. I just remembered something else. I wrote to Ophiel in late 1987 or early 1988, less than a year before his death. He replied by sending me several of his "vignettes." No personal letter, unfortunately. The return address given was in Danville, CA. If you want the exact address, contact me. I don't like giving addresses online.

  12. It is a pity that you demean your article and use it to slander Ophiel`s reputation by echoing a libel against him on your UPDATE. Why is it that you homosexual and gender people cannot digest that a man may have just a friend, and if he is a celebrity smear his name depicting him in a deviate manner ? You commit abuse availing he is dead and cannot defend himself -- as when Cary Grant sued Chevy Chase on false assumption and defended himself and won his case. Surely you are a lgbt member and not clean enough to respect my claim to be published.

    2. Publishing a LIBEL against Ophiel is shameless. Maags and "Unknown" bloggers being obviously homosexual just try to use any respectable celebrity to include them in your ill minority. I totally concur with the impecable and objective post by @reputationmanagement. One thing is to inform and other that you are commiting slander and using this blog to promote your lgbtxyz biased ways.

  16. Ophiel owned real estate and was a stockbroker and was very successful. He had one lover after that lover decided not to be with him anymore he decided to never be with anybody again because that was his true love he gave all this time to the occult. There are famous people that Ophiel helped them become successful. One person became a famous rapper. And I think really opened up doors for rap music. And there are others as well. Ophiel was still going to work on a different book that was very incredible and life-changing I do know what this book was about and it is quite amazing , once again being a Capricorn triple he could take what was so obvious and create a pathway to a better life.
